Electricity Terms To Learn
Below is a list of electricity related terms and words that should be helpful during this study.
These
words would also make a perfect vocabulary list for the duration of the study.
These words and terms are not in alphabetical order, but rather, are in an order in which they will
be used
during the study. Terms and Words
- Atom- The smallest particle of an element, which retains the
chemical make-up
of that element
- Element- A substance that can not be split into a simpler substance.
-
Electron- A subatomic particle which moves around the outer portion of the atom.
- Free
electron- electrons
responsible for electrical current.
- Subatomic Particle- Any particle smaller than an atom.
Each individual part of the atom (proton,
neutron, and electron) are all subatomic particles.
- Conductor- A substance which electrical
current can flow through.
- Insulator- A poor conductor, or non-conductor,
used to
block electrical current.
- Circuit- A path along which electrical current flows.
- Open
circuit- A broken
circuit. A circuit in which electricity can not flow.
- Closed Circuit- A circuit in which
electrical current can
flow freely along the circuit.
- Electromagnet- An iron rod with multiple coils of wire wrapped
around it. The coils are part of a circuit. When
the circuit is closed, the iron rod becomes a powerful magnet.
-
Switch- Controls the electrical current and can be responsible for making the circuit either closed
or open.
-
Battery- Produces electrical current by means of a chemical reaction.
-
Current- the flow and, or, rate of electricity.
More Terms to Consider Below are
more terms, words, and People that may be

Magnetism has such close ties to electricity. Our next series will be about magnetism, and
compliments this study quite well.
