Don't Laugh At Me - More Than A SongAs the parents of young children teaching them at home, one of the aspects that we must focus on is teaching them morals and values. This is one of those things that is taught from day one but often in subtle ways that we might not even realise. As they grow older we need to emphasize these character attributes. One of the ways we can do this is by reading positive esteem building story books. Some books are better than others. I've found one that is not only better but it's downright amazing. It's called Don't Laugh At Me and based on the popular song that has moved so many. The book itself is by Steve Seskin and Allen Shamblin and illustrated by Glin Dibley with an afterword by Peter Yarrow. It is published by Tricycle Press. The book comes with a CD of the song by the same title. The illustrations are wonderful in this book. There are lots of colors and when you combine the drawings, the colors and the words you have what can only be described as a uniquely moving experience. I have had this book in my home since this past summer and I still cannot read it without tears forming in my eyes. I'm an extremely compassionate person but it would be hard for anyone not to feel something at these words and beautiful pictures that show so much emotion. The passages in the book are short and easy to read but they grab at your heartstrings. I've read this book to my three year old so many times that he can say verses with me. My five year old has learned not to stare at others who are different. He uses a version of a verse in this book to remind himself. This book reminds us what compassion is truly supposed to be about. Our need to be free of bullying and verbal abuse at any age. It stirs emotions that make us as parents want to hug our children and remind them how much we love them. This song has not only inspired this book but it has inspired an entire movement to help eliminate bullying and start respecting. When this Peter Yarrow of the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary heard this song he was with his daughter according to his afterword. He knew that this song was destined to change lives. Thus was born Operation Respect.
