Let's Get That WRITE

© Denise Oliveri

Do you enjoy writing? Some of you will say "yes." Others of you will shout a big, hearty "no!" Either way, it is something that is expected of you. You may even be wondering why writing is so important, anyway. I mean, can't you just say what you want or know instead of writing it down? Isn't that easier? Maybe...just maybe, after reading this article you will see why writing is important, and how you can make it loads of fun.

Writing is one way that humans communicate. In fact, we would be very limited with who we can communicate with, if it weren't for writing. How would you be able to thank your great Aunt Gertrude for the sweater she knitted you for your birthday, if you didn't send her a letter or even an e-mail? Writing is one way that we get to tell others things we normally could not do.

When you think of writing, don't always think of long stories that take a lot of time to write. Start simple! Here are some nifty ways to practice writing. I bet you will find them fun and interesting:

  • Find an ePal
Check out ePals to find someone you can e-mail with in another state or country! This is a safe site for kids, but will need an adult to sign you up!
  • Create Your Own Newspaper
You will need to register (FREE) with Crayola first. Then, you can follow their easy directions for making your very own Newspaper. "Read All About It!" at Crayola.com.
  • Start a Journal
Have your mom buy you a nice new Composition Notebook. Everyday, put the date at the top of a new page, and write one or two sentences about something you did the day before. For example, "I washed my dad's car. He squirted me with the hose!" Just something simple. In a few years, you will look back at the journal and remember the silly things you did when you were younger!
  • Play Writing Games on the Computer
Writing Fix for Kids is a great place to play writing games. It is colorful and lots of fun! Try it today.

Now, you can let me know if you have some fun ideas for writing that you can share with others! Just send me an e-mail to Denise Oliveri, and I will post your ideas. Be sure to check out my new contest, too! You can win a really cool prize. See details on the main Homeschooling for Kids page. Best of luck!
