Get Art Happy!

Knock, knock!
Who's there?
Art
Art who?
Art you glad you found us?!

Art is a great way to express yourself. You can tell people how you feel through the things you draw, cut, color, and paste. Most of the time, you choose the things you want to create by what is of interest to you. What do you like to do? Ride your bike, eat pizza, or learn about dinosaurs? Chances are, you like to draw or create these things, too.

Kids and art just go together. You're like two peas in a pod! So, I want you to have a chance to celebrate your artistic talents. I have compiled many great resources that will help you develop your art skills. These are not just here for you to learn, but so you can have lots of fun, too.

How do you spend your rainy days? Instead of watching TV all day...how about jumping into a car that you create out of a cardboard box! Instead of eating junk food...how about creating an art gallery of painted pictures that your parents will love to see! Once you create something, have your mom or dad take a picture of it, so it can be saved for years to come.

You can make your very own "Art Kit." Just get a box. Decorate the outside of the box any way you like. Add paints, crayons, glue, scissors, stickers, tape, paper, glitter, and any other things to the box. Add to the box as you get new stuff. Then, put the box away somewhere. When you find you have nothing to do, pull out your box and get busy! I bet you come up with some really neat creations.

What's so great about art? Here are some neat facts:

  • Picasso could draw before he could walk and his first word was the Spanish word for pencil.
  • In ancient Roman spas they used mosaics on the walls with their colors arranged like paintings. The spas were associated with luxury and often the floors of the pools were lined with Thasian marble and the water poured from silver spigots.
  • A contemporary artist, Janine Antoni, made a sculpture of her head in chocolate by licking the chocolate into shape! She also did a sculpture in soap and took it into the bath with her and washed it into shape!
  • Every color we have comes from the primary colors.

Quiz time - what are the primary colors?
