Review:

McGraw-Hill has done it again with another great resource for classroom and home, alike. Weekday Workouts for Math are just the ticket for those looking for a quick 10-minute math exercise to warm up - or wrap up - the day's lesson.

Available is a small student book - a great size for carrying about for spontaneous math outside the home. There are 180 daily math problems and 36 weekly challenges per book. Affordable at under $4 per student book, this series gets one of my highest marks for value. These books are meant to be consumable but my children have shared a single book and worked out of notebooks. This brings me to the next great feature. Many of these "workouts" are great for a vast variety of ages. I reviewed the third grade level and found that my children, ages 7-10, all benefited from the daily exercises. My younger child considered them a personal challenge and my oldest child loved the review so much that he worked ahead, finishing the first week's worth of exercises in just a few minutes. I will definitely be buying him the workout book for his grade.

Also available is a teacher guide which is really handy for the upper elementary grades. Complete explanations, answers and helping teaching guides are included in the teacher guides. They retail for under $27 but I would skip the guide for the younger grades and reserve it for the older grades - maybe third grade and up.

Bottom Line: Weekday Workouts for Math are a perfect supplement to any math curriculum. They are fun, kids look forward to doing them, and they stretch and strengthen previous math skills and build future math skills all in one.
