Ages/Grades: Anyone age already doing math Review:

This book is totally fun! Arithmetricks is as it sounds - a book that teaches tricks, shortcuts and fast ways to solve common mathematical problems. I've seen and read other similar books and they usually contain the regular ole tricks we all know and love but this book had me hooked! Who knew there were so many different ways to quickly and easily solve math problems?!?!

The book is broken into addition, subtraction, and multiplication and division tricks. Then it is further broken into basic tricks and master tricks. So you can start where your child is and work your way up as your child ages. I would not recommend this book for children who have no previous experience or knowledge of the basic math concepts. There is no faster way to confuse and disorient a child than starting with the tricks! But once a child knows the nuts and bolts and method behind the math, they will have an absolute blast testing these tricks and may even memorize a bunch of them in the process. The master tricks might not be handy to use in a pinch like the basic tricks will but seeing the ways numbers work together seems almost magical!

The end of the book is just as much fun! There are cool tricks for estimation (who knew there was such a thing?) and tricks to make answer-checking fast and easy (what a handy skill to know!). The appendices are also filled with fun, interesting information and facts about numbers.

Bottom Line: Who knew math could be so magical and fun, all at the same time! Even for math-haters, this book is worthwhile because it shows that numbers are really amazing and can be worked in so many ways. There will be basic tricks you've never heard of and master tricks that may confound you! This is such a great resource to keep around for any child who already has a handle on the basic method behind the math concepts.
