Review In A Nutshell:
Title: First Language Lessons For The Well-Trained Mind Author: Jessie Wise Overall Rating (1-10): 10 Value (1-10): 10 Flexibility (1-10): 9 Ages/Grades: 6-9, First and Second Grades Review: This book follows the same spirit as The Story Of The World series. It is an instructional book for parents to guide them through the teaching of language during the first two formal years of education. Even if you do not follow The Well-Trained Mind - if you aren't sure how to go about teaching language or nervous that you might miss something, this book is for you. It is scripted - telling the parent or instructor exactly what to say to the child and how to instruct for each new lesson. The lessons are brief and children won't feel overwhelmed or frustrated by the small tidbits of language introduced each day. I found this book to be quite all-inclusive. 200 lessons guide parents (and their student-children) through the parts of speech, memorization of small pieces or prose and poetry, picture studies, narrations, copy work and more! By the end of the book (end of second grade), your child will have mastered adverbs and other areas of speech, interjections, paragraph formation and four basic types of sentences, direct and indirect quotations and so much more! This is such a great way to introduce language. If you are at all a new or ambivalent homeschooler, I highly suggest you check out this valuable resource for the first and second grade language lessons. Tips: Many of the lessons contain optional enrichment activities so you can expand upon the ideas presented in a fun and more in-depth manner, if desired. Bottom Line: This book is a great bargain and a great book for beginners or experienced homeschoolers alike. In 200 lessons expanding over 2 years, taking very little time out of your day, you will be scripted on how to present language lessons in an extremely thorough but fun way.
