The Seventh Inning Stretch - Page 3© Joan Archer In another area of health, I was wondering all the time why I was feeling generally icky, tired and short tempered. I finally decided to use the husband's blood sugar tester, and discovered my blood sugar was pretty low. (In the 70's) I thought about the last time I had eaten, and realized I had not eaten for hours. I remembered getting something for the boys, but I had gotten distracted and did not eat wtih them. Despite this, I am still pretty heavy, because I would get so hungry I'd grab the first thing I came across, which is never good for you. Also, I was craving sugary things all the time (Go Figure). Sugar in and of itself is not bad, it's just that it usually comes wrapped in so much fat. And that is bad. I have put myself on a regimen of eating something every four hours, like being on medicine. I have lost weight, because I am excercising more, and I generally feel better. It has also helped my temperament in general. I think I am one of those people unable to tell when I am actually hungry until I am starved. This is not all that uncommon. I have started a menu for each day of the week, because after a full day of homeschooling, I know I will have no idea what to cook, and frankly, I don' wanna! I fill it out on the day the paper has all the grocery ads in it, and ask for family input as to what they would like. Like any mom with a large family, if I don't get any specific requests, I cook what I like, and they can either eat it or starve. (You know they never do, they are all 170 lbs. or more, except The Baby, and he's in there swingin') I try to anticipate when we have an exceptionally busy day ahead, or a busy night, and plan accordingly. I either cook ahead, or plan something simple to cook. I make my grocery list from this, and we have been saving a lot of money on food. I also don't buy so many chips (now they are a rare treat) and other snack foods. We have a few kettle corn addicts in the house, so I do get some of that occasionally. I also keep a roll of masking tape, a marker, and a black crayon handy, to mark the stuff they are not supposed to eat because I need it for dinner. I also have completely re-organized my pantry system for maximum efficacy, and this has helped trememdously.
