  • Dry stone walls are historically pleasing, however, they are probably the most expensive form of fencing in time, materials and money. In Mending Wall the poet expresses his frustration at trying to figure out what causes the gaps that must be repaired each year. Stone is a plentiful material, however, there are tricks to choosing stones to fit together so the finished product is a flat, straight wall. Building stone walls is not "a forgotten art." It's possible for homeowners with perseverance to find talented wall builders and pay the monetary price, or to forge ahead and pay the price of time by constructing one by themselves.
    In Part II, we'll take a look at more styles of residential fencing, unique materials and include a checklist of requirements necesssary before planned fence construction begins.
