Composing the Picture: Views From the Inside, Looking Outward

During winter months, my all-embracing view is toward the west and magnificent sunsets. My immediate view is of the uprights of our rear deck. The simplest, solution to gain an interesting and ever-changing scene is the use of many types of birdfeeders, baths, and perches constructed from small dead trees stuck into all-weather flower pots. To make a dreamlike transition from dusk to dark, I've hung tiny white lights along the railings and through the tree branches. On the other hand, the view from my bedroom window while talking on the telephone or curling up in bed with an early morning cup of coffee is the result of many years of work implementing my overall plan. Parts of the plan and some plantings change subtly from year to year, but the main piece remains the same - a view of distant flowerbeds and borders framed by an assortment of deciduous and evergreen shrubs.
