Provings A 'proving' is where healthy people are given substances to take over a period of time. Their complete symptoms are then noted - their mental state, their physical condition, what makes them feel better, what makes them feel worse, their hates and likes etc. - everything that is unusual to the character of that person. Materia Medica The name of the substance together with its complete symptoms is recorded in this book. If Homeopathists had to rely solely on the Materia Medica, it would make finding the correct Remedy very difficult - you would have to read through every single substance until you found the one that corresponded to your symptoms - and it would be a very time-consuming task indeed! So this is where the Repertory helps. Repertory In this book, the symptons are listed under such headings as Mind, Head, Eyes, Nose, Throat, etc., and in italics next to each symptom is the abbreviation of the substance used to produce that particular symptom. (I know this may appear confusing, but the substance has to be prepared Homeopathically before it becomes a Remedy.)
