I have heard this question many times. "What can I do to help the homeless?" Most people mean well but they don't feel they have financial resources to help. Here is an essay about a man who gave of himself to help the homeless. He put aside materialism and prestige to do something for others. While he wishes to remain anonymous, I can at least share the news of his good deeds here and hope he inspires others.
So let me tell you a little about this man. He went to college for many years earning degree after degree. His goal was to become a college professor. After earning his Phd in Literature his dream came true and he taught at a college. Somehow this didn't satisfy the inner man and he felt a greater calling. At first he volunteered at the Food Bank. Then a position opened up. It didn't take him long to decide what to do. He gave up his job with the college and joined the Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto. He knows first hand from the clients who use the food bank what it is to be homeless and hungry. Not many of us would give up a lucrative position to work for the needy but this man did. That is what makes him so special. His life continues to reflect his generous spirit. His niece and nephews wanted a particular set of toys at Burger King. He went in and bought kid's meals and asked for different toys in each one so he could collect the full set. He took out the toys and set them aside to give his niece and nephew. What did he do with all that food? I remember doing something similar but I wasn't as compassionate. I didn't even think to do what he did next. I gave the extra food to my dogs for a treat. My friend, who also collected the toys, froze the food. Did this man put the food in the freezer to eat later on? Did he give it to his dogs? No. He went out to the streets where he knew the homeless hung out and gave out the kids meals. What a treat to the street people to have something special from Burger King. I can only imagine the grateful smiles. He made everyone happy. His niece and nephews got the toys. The homeless got the food. And this man showed us all what it really means to be a compassionate human being. He could have said, "The homeless get free meals at the shelter." They do, but what a treat to have something different or something extra. I'm sure those homeless were the envy of other street people. Have you given away food lately? Go To Page: 1
