How to build a window sash wall cabinet

win

The size of the wall cabinet will depend on what size the window sash frame is. As in this case, the frame with six "lights" sashes (which measures 30 inches wide by 32 inches high and with a wood thickness of an inch) was bought from a garage sale.

For the simple 1"x 6" box frame (Outside measurements), the sizes are cut to match the outside dimensions (OD) of the window frame which is 30" x 32" x 1 1/2". Pine boards are used for this project.

The two side pieces of the frame are cut to 32" long and the top and bottom pieces are cut to 28 1/2" long. (Butt joints are used for this project) On a work bench, position the long pieces for outer frame and shorter pieces for inner frame, apply woodworkers glue to joints and nail the boards together to make the frame work. While nailing boards, care is taken not to dent the boards with hammer marks. However, wood screws or biscuit joints may be a substitute for nails. Take diagonal measurements of frame to check for square. Adjust frame to suit square.

Next, cut the two 1" x 6" individual shelves to 28 1/2". Place shelves and nail to match the horizontal spacing of the window sash.

For the back, cut nine pieces of 1" x 3 1/2" x 1/4" backing boards to 32" long and then space the boards evenly (rip boards where necessary) to have matching pieces on either end of frame. The backing boards are of tongue and groove style, therefore the two outside pieces are cut to 2 1/2" wide. But on one board is ripped with the tongue removed, while the groove is taken off the other piece. Use 1" finishing nails or colored nails and nail boards along length of frame.

To install window frame, measure 2 1/2" from top and bottom side of window edge and then use wood screws to secure butt hinges in place. Transfer measurements to box frame, position window frame (flush mount) and adjust and screw hinges to box frame. To keep the window in a closed position, an eye and a hook device is used.

One half of the window frame glass is missing to give effect to the overall look of the project. Paint to desired preference. One recommendation is to paint the backing boards and the box frame prior to the installation the back frame.
