Home Renovations

RENOVATE WITH A CAUSE.

Whether it is interior or exterior renovations, such projects impact a homeowner's well being and wallet. Since renovations imply beautification and enhancement to the home, many homeowners find the undertaking an exciting and anticipating event. They mull and debate over material quality, design, preference, and overall cost of the project.

Even with careful planning, a hitch in the project can cause an overwhelming delay and thus spiral a domino effect down the line. Often with a hired contractor, the project runs afoul. Miscommunication and shoddy workmanship cause rifts between both parties. The shortcomings result in stress and many a nightmare. Although the reliable contractors are through word of mouth; their busy schedule sway many homeowners away from the waiting list.

However, with the ever increasing cost of materials and the sky-rocketing labor rates, more and more homeowners are resorting to the do-it-yourself and save projects. Many shop at major hardware stores for bargains and sales, long before a home project occurs. But for the novice, home renovations can be a daunting and frustrating experience, let alone, a trying time for partners in a relationship.

Yet, some still attempt projects, despite a haphazard knowledge of the required skills. Although a thorough knowledge of the building structure, plumbing and the electrical aspects of the trades are an asset; research and planning is a key element combined with insight and the "know-how", homeowners are able tackle such projects. To be successful with a home project, a minimum knowledge of the system is essential:

Knowledge of the basic tools and their safe use.

Knowledge of the safe use of power tools are essential to DIY projects. Read all instructions before all else fails.

Sizing up the project or getting the big picture.

Budge cost is very critical, since many projects overlap into adjacent rooms. (modification of walls, plumbing or electrical, etc.,)

Storage of the new materials in a dry space.

Do not remove or cut structural walls or beams until verified. (seek advice)

Use a step program to approach project. (e.g. bathroom…shutoff water supply, remove old tiles, gypsum board…)

Use reverse order to install the new materials.

Despite the knowledge required to perform the tasks, shortcuts and the know-how make the job easy, interesting and less tiring. To prevent bodily injury or damage to wall surfaces…, a helping hand (spouse) is a plus for beginners and even professionals. That applies also when installing drywall sheets; working with large cabinet units or working in awkward situations.
