BALANCING YOUR CHECKBOOK

to make this process stay easy.

> Record all transactions in your checkbook register as they happen.

> If you can't record a transaction at the time that it is completed, put the receipt directly in your checkbook so that the next time you open it, the accurate records will be available for recording. (Throwing them in your purse to later be thrown out with the gum wrappers, is not a good idea. Neither is shoving them in your wallet. It's too easy to procrastinate and never record them.)

> Don't skip a month of balancing. Balancing is only easy if you regularly do it.

> If you find that the bank made an error with their records, dispute it immediately. Banks normally give a window of thirty days from the date of the statement to dispute items on it.

> Don't procrastinate!

IN SUMMARY

Working in finance, I run across people everyday who do not balance their checkbooks. You're not alone. Many people were never taught how to do it. If you are having problems with this task, call your bank. Most banks are happy to offer their services and help you with your checkbook. This is your money. Don't be afraid to ask for assistance to protect it. Above all, once you get the hang of it, don't give it up. It's a monthly procedure that can save you money.
