The plant is a heavy feeder and should be fertilized regularily throughout the active growing period. Do not fertilize bulbs with no leaves, but once foliage show, regular full strength fertilizer should be used.
Indirect light is recommended to prolong flowering. During the vegetative growth stage, the bulb should be given plenty of light however. Full sun will be required in northern areas. Afternoon shade is recommended in the south.
Do not discard non-blooming bulbs for at least 2 seasons as the flowers takes about 18 months to develop. Keep away from ripening fruit or cut flowers
While growing in pots indoors, keep them moderately rootbound by using a pot only 2" wider in diameter than the widest place on the bulb. Outdoors, they benefit greatly from deep, loose soil for maximum root growth. Keep the nose of the bulb out of the soil. If you grow the amaryllis as a houseplant, repot the bulb annually and use a larger pot if the bulb has enlarged.
If you wish to program the amaryllis to flower for Christmas, dig and let foliage ripen latest August 1st. Make sure that the bulb has had 6-7 months of active vegetative growth prior to witholding water. Longer is better.
