Furnishing your home by mail not only saves you time, it also opens a whole new world of decorating possibilities. Can't get out to a decorating boutique in California or Washington? If they have a catalog, you can easily shop to your heart's content without ever leaving the comfort and convenience of your easy chair.
Kathy Barnes, editor of Do It Yourself magazine, offers us these reasons to shop by catalog: Comfort Shop around the clock, around the world, anytime. Convenience Browse, think about your decisions, give yourself time to research each purchase thoroughly. Variety Access to myriad products and styles. Quality Find high-style products that are not available in mass-merchandise stores. Returns Easy to do, unless custom-made. Reputable companies usually allow 30 to 60 days for returns. For successful catalog shopping, follow these suggestions from the Direct Marketing Association: *Read the order information carefully. *Inquire about order deadlines. *Check delivery options. *Keep records. Even if you order over the phone, complete the order form to have a written record. Note tracking numbers. *Pay with a credit card; you’ll be covered by the Fair Credit Billing Act in case of problems. *Never send cash. *Do not give personal information, such as bank account or social security numbers. *Keep all receipts until you are certain you are satisfied with a product. Tips for Buying Furniture by Mail When you shop for furniture by mail, ask enough questions to truly understand the product you are buying since you are not able to touch and sit in it. Consider asking these questions, for a start: *What type of wood is used in the frame? *How is the frame joined? *What type of support system does the piece have? *What is the cushion stuffing made of? *Are special cushion options available?
