A Fun-and-Fresh Tabletop for Easter Dinner

Fun-and-Fresh Tabletop
For this project, you'll need a supply of grass to fill the container. It's easy to grow your own grass indoors. Select your grass seed based on the desired look you want (Kentucky blue grass, or whichever grass seed is native to your area, works well). For a fuller look, however, use rye grass; for taller, wider blades of grass that are spaced further apart, use wheat grass. You can find grass seed at garden supply and home improvement centers. You can also purchase fully grown trays of grass at the health food store or your local pet shop.

Select a potting container that has a tray at the bottom, or line it with plastic so that the water doesn't leak out. You can grow the grass in the container you want to set on the tabletop as long as the container you've chosen is at least 4 inches deep.

Add potting soil to the container, filling it to the top. Next, add a generous layer of grass seed. Sprinkle a 1/4-inch layer of soil over the top of the seeds. Water the seeds as needed, making sure the soil is completely moist. Continue to water the grass seed regularly, make sure that the seeds do not dry out. Place the container in direct sunlight and allow the grass to grow. You can give your little lawn a mowing with a pair of scissors or just let it grow naturally.

To create a tabletop meadow, remove spring-blooming bulbs, such as daffodils or freeias, from pots (if you've purchased them commercially) or from your own garden. Transfer the grass from the starter pot (if you've grown it outside your display container) into your urn or container. Dig a small hole in the grass (a sharp knife works well) and tuck the plants in the grass. You'll have a tabletop meadow all to your own that announces the warm days and beautiful blooms of springtime.
