There are a lot of really good web sites out there that will give you some great information on how to improve and repair your home. But a good number of them are really just designed to try to get you to buy a company’s product or services. I have tried to sort though and find the ones that are worth your time.
Michigan State University has built a site that encompasses a huge amount of information. The “MSU Home Maintenance Extension Service” is a page that allows you to view information and suggestions for a particular topic. You can either search by a keyword or choose the first letter of the area you are interested in. The site is very basic and simple. There are not a lot (pretty much no) graphics or pictures. The one good thing about this of course is that the pages all tend to come up very quickly. The site will also give you the chance to view articles of varying levels of detail and complexity. Some articles tend to be just informational pieces while others will walk you through the steps necessary for a project. For example, if you click on the G item and then click on the link for “Cleaning Garbage Disposers.” You will have an article that pretty much says that you shouldn’t have to clean your disposer if you follow the guidelines that they line out for you. But if you blow it they give you some suggestions. “If odors should occur through an oversight, they can be removed by running orange or lemon peels or ice cubes through the disposer.” But then for the task of cleaning window and door screens, which I assume you may be interested in if you are having family over for the holidays, they give you some very good suggestions and step-by-step instructions for getting the job done. As an example, here is where they start. “Write a number on each window or door frame and write the same number on its screen. Put any screws or Go To Page: 1 2
