Winter Lawn Watering and Nutrition

Winter watering? Isn't that when my water bill is suppose to go down?

For some of us this is correct, but if you want your lawn to be one of the first to look really good and green next Spring, there are some steps you should take now to buildup for that.

The first is nutrition. Many of us don't think of our lawn as needing nutrition, but it does. And right now is when you need to give it some food to prep for the winter. You can kind of think of it as storing up food for hibernation, although your lawn isn't exactly going to do that.

Your lawn most likely needs a Fall fertilization feed right now. You need to get this down before it gets really cold, but not before the heat is over. Depending on the area in which you live you may be running short on time. You may consider calling a lawn care company like Lawn Doctor, and asking if they can come out and give your lawn the proper chow. They can also at least "spot" spray some of the broadleaf weeds that are trying to make a late comeback.

As for watering, if you're in a hot climate you probably need to continue watering like you would in the Summer, but for those that live in colder areas you can start to slow down. This does not mean stop. You should continue watering your lawn at least once or twice a week. Try to go with a good, deep watering each time. You want to really encourage those roots to go deep. You should keep this up until the end of October and possibly into the first part of November.

Remember you may have to draw a fine line on watering and freezing lines so keep an eye on the weather report.

Once Winter officially sets in your can water by touch and rain. This means that if you haven't received any rain or snow for about 4-5 weeks you probably need to water. The touch part is to get out there and see if your lawn is looking pretty dry. If so water it and give it a deep watering.

But don't forget to disconnect the hose when you're done, just to be safe.
