Home Prep for FallI don't know about you, but we just had a bit of a freak cold front come through our area. This of course caused me to start thinking about what I need to do to get ready for winter. Teh first thing that comes to my mind is the furnace. I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a clean filter and to clean it regularly. I then went through the house checking the vents. Mainly I was checking to make sure that they weren't covered by a piece of furniture or something else. I then looked for my air intakes. You may have one on the front of your furnace, but you may have others throughout the house. Mine had to be found. Make sure you don't have something in front of these. Your furnace will need this air. Another good check now, before its too late, is to check your weatherstripping on doors and windows. Check to see if you are getting good seals. If anything is missing or in bad shape replace it now before store stocks have been depleted by everyone else waiting until the last minute. Something in the yard that you will want ot keep in mind now is that you will need to turn off your sprinkler system and open the lines so remaining water in the lines can evaporate. I would not do this yet, but once it starts getting regularly cold it may be a step to take. You also may want to contact your local nursury and ask them if they recommend a Fall fertilizer treatment for your area. The idea is to put this down at a time in which your lawn is just about to go dormant. This then gives your lawn plenty of nutrients for next Spring and through the Winter. If you have a woodstove or fireplace now would be a good time to get the chimneysweep out to take a look at everything. You never know if your chimney looked like a good nesting place to a bird this Summer. This would also be a good time to find your winter clothes and necessary gear. I'm thinking of snow shovels and things. Let me know what some of your winter prep items area as well.
