Trees, Trees, Trees

I am not sure why, it probably has something to do with my childhood, but I have always had a soft spot for trees. I know that most people like trees but I tend to notice them a little more than other people.

Because of this fact I have tried to stay up to date on what is going on with trees and tree research. Previously I have shared information with you that has come from the Arbor Day foundation (www.arborday.org) including how to get 10 trees for free. I have also come across a program in my community that I thought you may want to check for where you live.

Our city has a program for street trees. Essentially the program is designed for new developments. The city knows that trees tend to have a great impact on how nice a community looks and keeps energy usage down. So our city will help you with a tree that you plant and maintain along the street edge.

The basics of the program are this. The city gives you a $100 certificate that you can use at certain nurseries around town. The certificate is to be used to purchase only certain types of trees. Once you have purchased this tree it is to be planted according to specific guidelines in your front yard. The idea is that the tree is for your enjoyment, but also for the betterment of the community as well.

When you plant the tree you are to follow their guidelines for the location but they may not give you a lot of information on how to plant it. The rules of thumb are that you dig a hole that is only as deep as the root ball, but that you make it a lot wider than the ball. This will give it some loose soil in order for the roots to begin to establish themselves. In this soil you may want to mix some mulch and then also cover the hole with some mulch in order to maintain moisture in the soil.

Check with your city, county, or local government to see if they have some sort of similar program. You may have a free tree waiting for you.
