Lawn Mowing

OK. I figure that we are all into the season of lawn mowing, right? You have probably already mowed your lawn at least a few times already this year depending on the area you are in and how much you water.

I thought it might be good to go over some ideas concerning lawn mowing that might improve your lawn and your mowing experience. Most of us probably don't actually enjoy mowing, but we can make it a little smoother.

To start with, you may need to adjust your mower each time you mow. I know this sounds a little tedious, but your grass is going to often times grow at different speeds. You should only cut off one third of the length of the grass blade. This is due to the fact that a plant actually evens itself between the amount of root to the amount of leaf or blade. So if you cut your grass too short it will not grow longer roots, and if you let it grow too long, when you do cut it, it will have trouble maintaining its root structure. So only cut a third off at a time and try to mow often so it doesn't get too long.

This may seem simple, but make sure to vary your mowing pattern. If you always mow with ever smaller circles, you are going to eventually work wheel tracks into your lawn and often miss the same strips off grass where those wheel tracks are. Try to always mow in a different pattern. Circles, diagonal, straight across, it doesn't really matter just so long as its different from at least the last mowing.

Consider using a mulching mower. With a good mulching mower you will be replacing the lawn's own nutrients back into the soil. You can also do this with leaves, if you are mulching them well enough. This also means that you will need to mow a little more often and make sure that your blades are sharp. You should really try to have your mower serviced each season.

This should really go without saying, but don't mow while your lawn is wet. First your grass will lay down where the wheels run and you will have strips sticking up. The grass will also stick more to the bottom of your mower. This can build up and cause a real problem the next time you try to use the mower.
