I would recommend that you work within the choices that they give you based on your soil type. You can try to change your soil characteristics if you want, but that can turn into a long-term, on-going project.

One thing to also remember about flowering trees is that they usually give some sort of fruit as well. This may be a positive if you like to make jam or jelly, but it can also mean a mess that you will regularly have to clean up over the course of each year. This may also have an impact on where you put the tree in the sense of your driveway or patio. Another positive of fruit is that it can bring birds around, but it can also bring bugs and bees. Just some things to keep in mind.

In shrubs you have a couple of choices. There are deciduous shrubs, evergreen shrubs, and flowering shrubs. A key decision choise on shrubs is where you want them and what kind of shape they will give. Generally a shrub is used to give a backdrop to your flowers, serve as a hedge, or to cover or hide something that is kind of bland such as a fence or part of the house.

You will want to consider the soil as we mentioned previously, but also the shape of the mature shrub. There are shrubs that can grow fairly tall and others will spread out horizontally. Another consideration is the time of bloom. You may want to consider buying some flowering shrubs that bloom at different times of the year. This way you will have color throughout the entire growing season.

Some warnings are that some shrubs will also produce a fruit. This can of course be messy and impact the plants around the shrub. Also flowering shrubs will attract bees and wasps and such so that is something to consider when you are planning the placement. You may want to avoid placing them right next to a door or under a window with a less than secure screen.

I hope this helps.
