Is it Approaching that time of Year?

Now you may be the type who likes to procrastinate, and if that is the case please do not read this article until December 22. For the rest of us it is time to start to think about Christmas presents, and if you are reading this article you or someone you love is a home improvement kind of person.

There are of course plenty of great gifts that you can get for your home improvement nut, but I thought I might make some suggestions of my own.

One tool that is so handy its scary, is a Leatherman tool, or other similar types. This are tools that fold up into a relatively small size and can be carried on in a belt holder or even thrown in a purse. They come in a number of variations and are made by several different manufacturers. Right off the bat let say that I recommend that you avoid the off-name brand versions. They are usually made of inferior metal and with poor craftsmanship. They are often more of a frustration than a help.

Some of the brand names that are going to last are the ones you are familiar with, like Leatherman, Buck Tools, etc. They come in a variety of sizes and tool choices. Some even offer the parts can be removed and added. I wouldn't go with too much that could be easily lost. One sugestion is that you try them out at the store. Some of the Leatherman tools do not offer a locking mechanism which can be almost dangerous. The Leatherman Super Tool does offer a locking mechanism, but it is a large tool. Check the comfort level when actually using the tools. In some cases the Buck Tool may be more comfortable just because of the ways the tools fold back up. It all depends on how it is going to be used.

Another idea might be a starter socket set. Many of us have socket sets, but we have lost pieces over the years. Craftsman is still a great choice in this area due to the lifetime guarantee. You may want to look for a set that offers some unique kinds of options. Longer extensions are always handy. Universal joints can be invaluable. You may see if you can find a piece that is a snake extension with a built in magnet. This becomes very useful when you drop that nut and can't quite reach it.
