A Different type of Improvement

Now I don't normally get into this kind of thing, but I just had something somewhat interesting happen this weekend. We live in a small home which we love. We don't have a lot of room for a lot of stuff, therefore we don't keep a lot of junk around.

When we moved into this home we already had a sectional sofa. It was nice and comfortable, but it was starting to show its years. It seemed to fit in the home OK and we just worked with it. I mentioned to a friend that we were starting to think about getting something new. A few days after this, she gave me a call.

They live in a large home with an unfinished basement, and have been wanting to get that basement finished. They also have a parlor in their home that had some wonderful wood furniture with green pads. She found a great deal on some new furniture, but didn't really have any place to put it since the basement isn't finished. She came up with a plan.

She asked if we would like to "house" her furniture for her until she gets the basement done. Its hard to say when this will happen, but in the meantime, it gives us some newer furniture, buys us some time for shopping for our own, and gives her a place out of the weather to store this furniture.

As it turns out, it was a much smaller set. It is a chair, loveseat, and table. When we pulled out the old sectional and put in this smaller set, practically the whole house changed. There is now room to get through the living room. There is more space for storage. We moved a cedar chest and a keyboard to some other locations. A lamp was moved into a more central location that now brightens the room. There is more room for walking.

All of these "problems" were never even noticed prior to the furniture change. They were "felt", but they were never mentally relaized.

May I suggest that if you feel that you are not completely happy with a room, that before you put a bunch of money into remodeling that you take a hard look at your furniture and see if a change needs to be made there first.
