Although most seem to think that Fall is the time to start to put everything away and close down the yard, it may not be the best time for that kind of move. Autumn is actually a great time for planting several kinds of plants. Trees are definitely a good possibility at this time. The ground is still easy to work, and the weather is stable. the tree will have time to get established before winter hits. You can either plant bare-root or container trees. Just make sure you dig the hole as deep as the container or root-ball and about about five-times its size in width. This will give the roots the space to spread.

Bulb flowers that bloom in the Spring can be planted now. This is the best way to figure out where your color is going to be in the Spring. If you already have some Summer bloomers in, consider putting some Spring bloomers in around them. This will give you color throughout the Spring and Summer next year.

Avoid a lot of fertilizing right now, or a least make some careful choices. The wrong fertilizer right now is going to bring up some young growth that might not make it through the Winter.

This is also the time to begin planning for what you need to do for Winter preparation. Depending on your area of the country and the plan of your sprinkler system, you may need to think about scheduling your system to be air-blown out. This entails someone coming by with an air compressor and blowing air through your sprinkler system to get rid of most of the water before it can freeze and split your pipes.
