We just learned some cold, hard facts concerning home remodeling. If you have to do anything that is slightly out of the ordinary, it is going to cost you some big bucks. We own a home that is about 20 years old. We still have the original, single-pane windows, which are of course kind of leaky. We took all our measurements and went window shopping.
We headed down to Home Depot and found that none of our windows are standard size (looking at the windows that they had on the shelf, I was wondering if anyone has a "standard" size window). When we inquired about this fact we were informed that they could special order any size that we wanted. We gave them our sizes and found that to have a window made to size it was going to cost about twice as much. Now you can give me all the reasons in the world as to why this is this way, but I really don't care. On top of that, we were told that once ordered it was probably going to take at least 3 weeks to get our windows. Needless to say, we didn't order our windows. I'm a little partial to giving my business to local businesses, so I called some of the local companies and found that they were more expensive and the time frame was just as long if not longer. It is amazing how money, or the lack there of, can make one become somewhat creative. As we looked at our situation, my husband became a little creative. He use to work with a company that made different types of storm windows and screens. They used a type of plexiglass. To cure our situation with cold in the winter, we are going to make our own storm windows out of plexiglass. The plan is to use clips with draft-proof foam. I'll have to let you know how it goes. If it works, we will most likely save at least $100 per window and be more flexible with air flow in the Spring and Summer. I"ll keep you posted as we progress through the project. Go To Page: 1
