The is a Test. This is only a test of your Lawn

I tend to do things my own way. When someone says to do things a certain way I usually want to know all the usual questions: why, how, when, who, what, and where. Now this may seem like a basic test to some, but I wanted to know how grass seed would work the best in my yard. We have a situation that I am sure most of you are familiar with since it is probably most of our yards. When we moved into our home the yard had been badly neglected. The lawn was very patchy. It was to the point that we almost considered starting from scratch and tearing it all up and putting sod down. Instead we were wondering how we may be able to save it. As I began to investigate the possibilities, I considered the idea of just filling it all in with grass seed. As simple as this may seem, my question was what would be the best way to do this. I could either do it the way that the bag said, or I could try it the lazy way and just throw the seed out. I am not really that lazy, and I really wanted the grass to grow. So instead of trying it the lazy way first, yes I know that this is backwards from the way that we people usually do things, I did just about everything the bag said to do. The bag said to prepare the area and I did this with one simple tool. A hula hoe, for those that are unfamiliar with it, is a thin, flat rectangular band that you can slide back and forth on the ground and force it to burrow down about 1-3 inches. This was the perfect depth according to the grass seed instructions. I then threw the seed in the yard specifically in the areas that I had prepared. I then took small shovelfuls of dirt and lightly spread a layer of dirt over the newly sown seed. The final step was to make sure that the yard stayed moist. To do this I made sure that the lawn was watered three times a day for 15 minutes each. For our yard this seemed to be just right. The good news is that this worked just like the page said. It took about a week to start to see some small sprouts. In about three weeks we had some really nice growth. I am still waiting for the grass blade to thicken up a little bit, but I am very pleased.
