Is There a More Inexpensive way to do That?

I am looking for some cheaper ways to accomplish some tasks around the home. I'll share some that I've come across, and I'd like for all of you to share some of yours. I'll get a discussion going on this page. One of the best are plastic garbage bags. These things are immensely useful in all kinds of ways, and I'm not just talking about keeping your sleeping bags dry. If you are going to be putting in some rock you can go to Home Depot and buy some weed stop, or you can use a garbage bag. Simply take the bags and cut them so that they lay flat with only one layer. They should stretch out about 6 feet and lay 3 feet wide, depending on which ones you buy. Lay these out as your weed block and place your rocks on these. With the right depth of rock and edging, you won't even see it.

If you don't have a lot of room for a compost pile, about a garbage composter. You will need to poke a couple holes in the bag for it to vent, but if you are careful you will be able to turn the bag every so often to keep the composting going.

How about a handy drop "cloth" for painting or messy inside work? Again, slice the bag so that it lays flat and you can drag it along with you when you move to the next painting spot.

Speaking of painting, how about a cardboard box flap for a claen paint edge. Instead of buying some expensive "edging tool" you can cut the flap of a cardboard box, use it for an edge guard and then throw it away when you're done.

And before you paint, if you have some water spots or stains that you want to cover up, don't buy expensive "coverup" paint. Instead use some inexpensive shellac. If you use a light colored shellac and just paint it on the water stain and let it dry, it will act as a sealant and then you can paint right over it.

Let me know about some of your ideas for saving money on yor home projects.
