Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!I of course do not know where you are right now, but for a good number of us we either are already dealing with snow, or are soon going to be in the thick of it. I'm the kind of fellow that enjoys a brief snow. This is the kind of snow that sticks just long enough for you to enjoy the sight of your home and landscape being whitewashed, and then it melts away. The problem is that we don't always know when a snow is going to be light or heavy. We also do not know if it is going to be dry or extremely wet. The latter of these is what we have to be careful with. Snow can cause a multitude of problems, and they do not all relate to driving and flying. I'm sure all of us have had a good slip on the snow and ice. The best way to avoid this is to of course shovel the walk and driveway. You will save yourself a lot of back breaking work if you can shovel your driveway before you drive on it. Once you cruise across that powder it quickly transforms into ice that is now stuck to your drive. Try to get out there early. Also, a word of caution on those snow and ice melting compounds. Most of us have grass or planting areas right up to the edge of our driveways and sidewalks. Please read the instructions on the different brands from which you are choosing. Many of these can be harmful to plant life, and often it is longterm. When in doubt ask your nursery manager. Please keep an eye on your trees. Even evergreens are not immune to the effects of heavy snow. Don't be afraid to get your ladder out and knock some of the snow off the branches you can reach. I would of course recommend an A frame ladder. Make sure the ladder is on sure footing. In many cases, not only will you save a branch, but often you will save the entire tree and maybe part of your house or car. I've seen very large branches that were split and weakened by snow weight, and then brought down on a home in Spring winds. With a little preemptive work, you can save yourself a lot of heartache and labor. Snow can be a joy and a great memory maker, but there are cautions that we should heed, as with most anything.
