Send Them back to School With a Smile

Any one of these gift baskets will get your student off to a good start. Don't let them go through them until you have left them, teary-eyed, at the dorm.

For the first time scholar

Whether it's pre-school or kindergarten, the first day of school is both exciting and scary. Here are a few ideas to make that day a little nicer.

No school day is complete without the right backpack. Now, little students will want to pick it out themselves. OK, but keep a few things in mind. Bigger is not always better. I know you would prefer to get one that they will grow into. That doesn't really work with backpacks. Kids are hard on them, and you'll be lucky if it lasts all year. IF you get one that is too big, Junior will want to bring everything he/she owns to school.

Keep it compact. It's not like they will be carrying books back and forth. Make it big enough for a box of crayons, pictures to bring home and their lunch. For most young ones a clear, see-through pack is a good idea. You can find them with your child's favorite characters on them. Make sure it has a little pocket inside, for carrying notes back and forth. That way you will be sure to get that announcement about Parent's Night. Don't worry. You CAN find a back pack like the one I have described. It may take a few trips to the store, but it's worth it in the long run.

Now for the lunch box. If your little student will be bringing their lunch to school, they'll need a carrier. Again, let your child help pick it out. However, you need to get the right one for your child's needs. There are so many choices out there. Choose whether or not to go for the box style. If your kid is pretty hard on their stuff, a lunch box is the only choice. They are sturdy, and there are many styles to choose from. Make sure, though, that it includes a good thermos. If you opt for a vinyl pouch, make sure there is enough room for the lunch and a thermos. You will probably need to purchase the thermos separately. Most important, make sure your kid likes it. If they don't, it WILL get lost in the first week of school.

Make sure you send them off to
