Homemaker; The Unsung Hero

© Eileen O'dea

Homemaker, housewife, or domestic engineer; which ever you choose they are the world's most unsung heroes. If you are one, sit back and relax. If you live with one, pay attention. We're going to take a look at what they do to keep the home fires burning.

First, let proudly say I am a homemaker. I do not like the work housewife. I am NOT married to my house, although sometimes it feels like it.

If you aren't a homemaker you might think differently about yours after you see, in writing, everything they do. It even surprises me and I do it for a living.

The List

A homemaker is or does all of these things.

A. Cleaning woman, or man if applicable. Yes we even do windows. If we didn't who would?
B. Decorator, we make sure the home is the envy of all who see it.
C. Chef, that's right whether it's meatloaf or a crown roast, the homemaker does it all. And without a prep cook, buss boy or dishwasher.
D. Secretary, we are the ones that make, and take, all the calls and make all of the appointments.
E. Personal shopper, yup we buy the socks, underwear and other essentials.
F. Laundress, we are the ones who make sure the whites are white and the brights are bright.
G. Personal Nurse. Oh yea, we become the head nurse when a family member gets sick.
H. Escort, yes we go to all of the work parties and look good on the arm of our mates.
I. Travel agent, we plan the vacations, make the reservations and plan the activities.
J. Landscaper, Hey he might mow the lawn, but we make everything else look like a page from Better homes and Gardens.
K. Cheerleader, we go to all of the softball games and cheer our significant others on as they try to look like Derrick Geeter.
L. Councilor, we're always there to listen when our family members need to vent.
M. Chauffeur, we drive you to work, the kids to school, to the practices and games and the train station or airport.
N. Caterer, We bake the pies cakes and cookies for the bake sales, office parties and birthdays.
O. Domestic engineer, if something in the home brakes or falls apart we either fix it or call the right person for the job, so it's fixed when you all get home.

Wow! How's that for a job description? And, hey, we volunteer for that job. Do you have any idea what it would cost to pay all of those individuals? It boggles the mind.
