Good Manners; Gone the Way of Dinosaurs?

The holiday season is coming up on us fast, time for get togethers and reunions. It's also time to use our best manners. Or, at least I would hope so. If you look around you will probably notice that a whole generation is growing up without good manners.

Now I'm not saying that all parents are lacking in these lessons. However, There seems to be an awful lot of kids, today, that just don't use manners. Or should I say they don't use GOOD manners. I have been noticing this fact more and more lately. A recent trip to our local fast food place was my last straw.

It was a busy night; there were plenty of kids and teenagers. There were also some parents splattered among the crowd. My Hubby and I were flanked on each side with two families. Normally I wouldn't even notice, but the manners and lack of manners was striking.

Table number one, to our left, was a father and 5 kids. The kids' ages ranged from four to fourteen. The little kids were being kids. The two teenagers were trying to keep them in check while Dad got their food. They all sat down when their food came. They all ate while Dad talked at the top to his lungs. All in the crowded restaurant could hear his voice.

The kids were still being kids, noisy but not loud. Then one of the kids belched, not really loud but it could be heard. Dad, as loud as he could, yelled "Who Belched!?". The culprit quietly admitted doing it. Dads, again very loudly told him to say excuse me.

My first thought was ahh a father who teaches manners. Well he did, but as he continued to blast out his conversation, I had to wonder if his demands could overbear his actions. I think he needed a reminder of good manners.

Table number two, to our right, was a Mom with three teenagers. Again I wasn't trying to hear their conversations, but they were loud enough to hear without trying.

They all used four letter words frequently. Mom should have known better, but she also should have curbed the cursing in, public. Not to mention the fact that they were using the "street" language in front of and to an adult. They all needed a lesson in good manners.

Why did this trip to the fast food place stick in my mind? Manners, or the lack of them. What happened to having good manners? When did they become so sparingly used?
