The Mighty Dandelion!?

We all have either a love for dandelions, or a hatred for them. If you belong to the later group, I just might be able to change your mind. Maybe not to loving the wonderful plants, but you just might look at them a little differently.

What exactly is the Dandelion? Many call it a weed, some a vegetable, and others a wonder plant. I'm one of those others. This wasn't always true. Sure, when I was a kid, I loved picking them for my mom. But when I had to start taking care of the lawn, I saw them as the enemy. I would dig them out, by the roots, and toss them in the trash. Then I started reading about the Mighty Dandelion.

It shows up in books both of weeds and herbs. They can also be found in some vegetable books, and even recipe books. Yes, The mighty dandelion is part of an elite club of plants. These plants are used from root to flower. No part is unusable.

The common everyday wild dandelion is most identifiable. There are few lawns that can escape at least one rouge plant. Every time a child blows on the fuzzy head of a spent flower, the seeds disperse. Flying through the air. On their way to some unsuspecting patch of dirt. Where it will take root and start a new plant.

Once you know all that can be done with the dandelion, you will look at them through different eyes.

The Mighty Root

The root of the Dandelion is an important part of the plant. Some folks grow the plant just for the roots. They are cleaned and either used fresh, or dried and ground into a powder.

¨ The root contains a rich emollient great for soaps and lotions. ¨ It is the ideal balanced diuretic because it supplies potassium. *This makes it good in treating Kidney and Liver complaints. Simply decoct ( dissolve) 1tablespoon root powder in water and drink three times a day. ¨ The powdered root acts as a terrific cloth dye. Place the powder loosely in a muslin bag,(apx. ¼ cup). For the mordant; for ¼ lb. Wool use 1 oz. Alum to 1 gallon water, for ¼ lb. Cotton add ¼ oz. Washing soda to the Alum and water mix. You will get a color from red to violet. *Always consult your doctor before trying any herbal health treatments.
