Redecorate or Remodel? That is the Question

© Eileen O'dea

It's a question we all ask, at one time or another. Your house is getting smaller. Or it sure feels like it. Do you really need to add on, or remodel? Or, would a little rearranging and redecorating do the trick? Both good questions. Both worth some serious thought. Here are some fixes, to add more space, to the space you already have.

Room by Room:

Take the time to access the space that you already have.

Do you have a big Master bedroom? Do you really need such a big Master Bedroom? No? Do you have a smaller room you could use? If so, you have just created a larger family room, play room or home office.

Do you need another bathroom, or will a half bath do? If so, a large closet can be turned into a half bath pretty easily.

Do you need more closet space? Or, does your old house have no closets? Mine doesn't. This is where you can save yourself some remodeling. Purchase a free standing wardrobe, or portable closet. A metal cabinet in the laundry room can hold the vacuum, brooms, mops, buckets and other cleaning supplies.

No linen closet? A nice cedar chest, or even a pretty wicker one, can do the trick. They can be placed in a bathroom, or bedroom corner. If you want it out of sight, stash it in a closet. Or, leave it in the laundry room.

Do you have a very small kitchen? It is possible to remedy this problem. By adding a fold down table, you can have an eating area that you can hide. The table can also double as an extra counter. If their is no wall space, for a fold down table, maybe this would work for you. Place a small table and two chairs right outside of the kitchen. This will save space in the room and give the feeling of expansion of the kitchen area.

Are you faced with piles and piles of books and magazines? Ones you can't bare to part with? Well, they don't need to be scattered all over the house. Purchase some wicker, wooden, or metal, large file draws, depending on your decorating style. They can be filled and tucked under the coffee table, on a shelf on your entertainment center, or under either side of your computer desk. Kept neat and dust free, these drawers make a nice functional piece of furniture.

Jerri, you've got your hands full. But you're right, it will all be worth it in the end. Good luck and Gods speed.
