A Harvest Celebration

Well the harvest is nearly done, at Shady Acher Farm.

All of the Tomatoes have been either canned, turned into sauce, sun dried, or eaten by the plate full. There are still a few green ones clinging to the vines. They will soon become pickles.

The Carrots have been frozen, stored, and used for baking. The same for the Zucchini. Sunflower heads hang to dry. They soon will be food for the winter birds.

The popcorn is also hung up, to dry. By Thanksgiving it will be ready to pop.

The early crops have been finished for a while now. Their plots have been turned over and readied for winter.

Most of the herbs have been harvested and are drying. Some of the Basil is now pesto and in the freezer.

The deep freezer has been going and is getting quite full. Although, there will still be room for baked goodies for the holidays.

The canners haven't left the kitchen in months. They have been used nearly every day. I'm getting to the point where I can't wait to get the room back. That will happen soon enough, though.

Pumpkins and Gourds still cling to their vines. They will be picked this week. Some of the Pumpkins will become puree, the others decorations. The Gourds will grace the tables right through Thanksgiving. In the sweet grass baskets I made this year.

The potatoes have been dug, and stored away, for winter. So too are the turnips a parsnips. Despite the Summer drought, the root crops did very well.

There are drying flowers, grains and other decorative plants, hanging in the barn. The will be essential in fall decorating and gift giving.

Along with the harvest comes bulb planting time. The beds are ready and waiting for their treasures.

The leaves, what are left of them, are being gathered for winter mulch. With all of the trees, on the acre, there is no shortage of mulching leaves.

This is also the time of year for some tasty cooking. The air is getting crisp and our meals become more hearty. Home made soups and roasts are replacing Barbecues. The cool air also makes baking very desirable. My kitchen always has some yummy aroma wafting around. Here are two of my very favorite Fall foods.

Homemade Chicken Soup

You need:

1 whole chicken 1 large yellow onion 4 stalks of celery 2 heads of garlic 8 cups water, more if needed 1/8 cup freshly cracked black pepper 2 tbls. Kosher salt 3 tbls. Dried parsley
