Mom I’m Bored!
It's on it's way. It's coming on fast. It's Summer Vacation. The kids will be home from school, and looking for something to do.
What's a parent to do? Well, you could schedule a nervous breakdown. Or, you can try a few of my, Summer, boredom busters. All are fun and educational. But don't worry, your kids wont even know their learning.
Feed their Creativity
1. Help them create a Family Tree Scrap Book. Give them some family pictures, tell them the family's stories, and then let them get creative.
2. Build a Tree House or Fort. It doesn't have to be House Beautiful, just their creation.
3. Start a leaf or flower book. Start with a plain scrapbook. Have the kids press gathered leaves or flowers, and press them. Then have them do a little research, to find out what they are. Like Maple, or Lazy Susans. They can glue the leaves/flowers in the book and make a caption with the name.
4. Create a board game. With a large piece of cardboard, and some markers, they can come up with their own board game.
5. Make a musical instrument.
6. Learn to weave. Whether it's a pot holder, or something much bigger, they'll learn about textiles.
7. Have them create their own comic strip. They can work on it every time they feel board.
Think Natural
1. Go on a fossil search. They don't need to go far to do this. Odds are, they can find fossils in your own back yard. There are some great books, for kids, on identifying Fossils.
2. Learn the constellations. Sure they probably know the big and little dipper, but do they know all of the others? With the help of a good book, they can eventually be able to identify all of them.
3. How about Bird watching? Have them put out a bird feeder, and identify the different birds.
4. Visit a Game Farm, or Zoo. If you have one of them near by, the kids can learn all about their favorite animals.
5. Visit an Arboretum. You might be surprised at their joy, in learning all about plants.
6. Have them start a stone collection. Either their favorite looking stones. Or one of every type, they can find.
7. If you live near the country, visit a Dairy Farm. Many give guided tours. Some also offer free ice cream after the tour.
