Hooray for Bats!

Bats also like climbing vines such as ivy and honeysuckle. They can roost and, on the honeysuckle, feed on the flower nectar.

Lights

Bats, as insects, are attracted to Mercury vapor lights. Such as the kind you might have atop your garage. The bats in my yard, love our garage light. They can scoop up a fast and easy meal, on the go. They really put on quite a show. We sit on our deck and watch them for hours. By the way, the misquotes are at a minimum, thanks to the bats.

If you are serious about creating a bat friendly habitat, stay away from spraying your lawns with chemicals. The bugs eat the chemicals, the bats eat the bugs, get sick and die. Try to stay as organic as you can. That will be better for the bats, for you and for the environment.

Bat Facts

*There are three species of Vampire bats. They are all found in South America, and are quite small. These bats are very shy, but their diet does include small amounts of blood.

Presently, Medical researchers are testing bat salvia as an anticoagulant for heart patients. So, you see, even the vampire bat, can be beneficial to man.

*The Male Hammer-headed bat has such a loud voice, that at close range, they sound like car alarms. The calling males get together to form a choirs, which creates quite a performance in the African Forests.

*Millie Hill Mine, in Michigan's Iron Mountain, is thought to contain the largest hibernating colony of bats, almost 1 Million. Makes you wonder who did all the counting, doesn't it.

Another benefit of Bats

Bats can put on quite a show, over water. They gracefully fly over the water, swoop down and grab their meal. When there are many bats feeding from the same source, they create a sort of ballet. It really is a sight to see.

So why spend $8 for a movie, when you can pull up a lawn chair and watch the bats. Just remember to keep quiet. Noise will affect the gracefulness of the show.
