Edible Theme Gardens

© Eileen O'dea

Many of my Edible gardens have themes. I try to grow things together, that I use together. It's really easy and they make great conversation pieces. In this week's article I'll share some of them with you. Feel free to copy them or just let them get you planning your own theme garden.

A Salsa Garden

I grow a Salsa Garden every year. My family loves my salsa. It's made with what I grow, and if I may say so, it tastes better than store bought.

My Salsa plot consists of; Tomatoes, Sweet and Hot Peppers, Onions, tomitillo, Celery, Cilantro, and Dill. All of these plants grow well together. I always make sure that these Veggies and herbs are only for salsa. This way I will grow as much as I need and I won't run out of something.

I grow this garden in the ground, but you can easily grow all of these plants in pots. So, even if you don't have a lot of space, you can grow your own salsa.

A Garnish Garden

OK, an herb garden can be considered a Garnish Garden. But not in my yard. My herb garden is for fresh and dried herbs for cooking only. My Garnish Garden is filled with things I use only for garnishes.

My Garnish plot consists of; Curly Moss Parsley, Pineapple Chocolate and Pepper Mints, Cherry Tomatoes (one plant is plenty for any family), Ground Cherries, Nasturtiums, Pansies, and Chives (for the flowers).

These are the garnished I use most often, but the possibilities are endless.

A Snack Garden

I always grow Snack garden. Home grown snacks are more nutritious, and you know exactly what you're eating.

My Snack Garden might consist of ( it changes from year to year ); Pop Corn, Strawberries, Peanuts, A Potato plant or two (for homemade chips), and always some Sunflowers (for the seeds).

An Ethnic Cooking Garden

If you like ethnic cooking, and you have the room, this garden is a must. Some of the ingredients for ethnic cooking can be expensive, if you can find them. Growing your own ingredients is a perfect alternative.

A Mexican Garden might consist of; Tomitillo, Mexican Hot Peppers, Sweet Peppers, Onions, and any other ingredient you will need, that you can grow in your zone.

An Italian Garden might consist of; Eggplant, Tomatoes ( slicing and paste types), Basil, Oregano, Garlic, Thyme, Rosemary, and all other Italian food ingredients you can grow in your zone.

What a great idea! I especially like the idea of the Salsa and Snack gardens. Eileen, you are brilliant when it comes to gardening and houses. It is a real talent with you. Maybe you could be the next ...
