Realistic New Year's Resolutions;Making Sure You Fulfill Them

Yes, it's that time of year again. Time to make those New Year's resolutions. If you're like me, you make grand resolutions. Ones you will probably never keep. This year, try making only one grand resolution. Then make a few realistic ones.

Nearly every one resolves to lose some weight. That's not a bad plan, but don't set unrealistic goals. Instead of setting a number of pounds, just eat less junk and more healthy foods. You will lose weight, and won't worry about the pounds.

Another popular resolution is to quit smoking. Thousands make that one every year. Fewer than half actually follow through. So don't make that resolution, unless you are very serious about quitting. This has to be one of the hardest things to do. I quit, cold turkey, three years ago. I still get the urge to light up, now and then.

Some more realistic resolutions are: Trying to be a better person. That one is easy if you really apply yourself. Another is doing some volunteer work during the upcoming year. Now I'm not talking joining every committee, or cause you can find. Start with one good cause and stay with that. By not over-extending your self, you wont feel pressured, and will follow through.

How about resolving to learn a new subject? You've always been interested in history? Take a night class. You'll fulfill your resolution and learn something new. A double benefit. Now who could ask for more?

If you have a few extra hours a week, why not resolve to become a mentor. There are lots of mentor programs out there. Just contact your local schools. They'll be happy to point you in the right direction. The benefits? You fulfill your resolution, make a difference in a child's life, and you make a new friend. And who knows, You might even learn something from that child.

What about resolving to become more fit. I'm not talking hard and heavy daily workouts. Just taking a daily walk, can help get you in shape. It gets those endorphins going, and will improve your overall health. It's low impact and, if you get a friend to join you, it doesn't even feel like working out. Even though it is.

Here are some harder resolutions, but they are attainable.

Striving for a new position at work. Notice I didn't say getting a new position. That is usually unrealistic. Striving for that promotion can be done. Simply apply yourself a bit more on the job. Volunteer for overtime every once and a while. Don't make it obvious, or you could ruin your chances. If you do get the promotion, great! If you don't, at least you will know that you did a good job, and so might your boss.
