Doing The Holidays on a Shoestring Part 2: Gifts
Every year we swear we're not going to overspend on gifts for the Holidays. And every year, it seems, we end up throwing caution to the wind and max out the credit cards. It really doesn't need to end up that way. You can spend less, and still be very generous. All it takes is a little planning, and an iron will. The planning will prevent those impulse buys. The iron will, will be needed to stick to your plan. It is said that it's the thought that counts. Nothing could be more true. Putting a lot of thought, instead of a lot of money, into a gift shows just how much you care. The only trick is to really know the gift recipient. If you do, there should be no problem choosing an inexpensive gift. Buying a gift: If you always buy your gifts, here are some money saving ideas. Shop the sales! Now I know there are sales from Thanksgiving through Christmas. Watch the circulars that come in the paper and mail. If your kid just has to have that new boom box with the CD player get it on sale. Trust me, it will be. If you have a big family, and you all exchange gifts, try person specific gifts. I mean, if your sister has a passion for chocolate, give her a box of candy. Don't feel cheap about it. If she truly loves chocolates, she will love the gift. If your brother is always losing his keys, get him a sound sensitive key chain. The kind that beeps when you clap your hands. The first time he uses it, he'll be thanking you like crazy. If there is a collector on your list, shop the Flea Markets. You can find all sorts of treasures, and they are usually reasonably priced. If you have a teen on your list, shop the Dollar stores. You can pick up an entire gift bag full of goodies. From makeup to candles, to jewelry, the dollar stores are a treasure trove of neat stuff. They also sell plenty of toys for the little ones. Making Your Gifts If you are crafty, try your hand at making your gifts. Lots of people love getting handmade gifts, because they know they come from the heart. Your possibilities are endless. From Hand Milled Soaps,to Hand Made Candles, to cute little ornaments, your imagination is your best asset.
