One to Watch: Natasha Lyonne

Her next big film was 1999’s American Pie, which is this generation’s Porky’s. She doesn’t have many scenes in this film, but she makes good use of the few lines she has. That same year she co-starred in the KISS tribute movie, Detroit Rock City. Rumor has it that Gene Simmons himself hand-picked Lyonne to be in the film. Not to end 1999 with just two movies in the can, Lyonne then took a starring role in the off-beat JohnWaters-esque comedy But I’m a Cheerleader.

The year 2000 was a relatively quiet year for Lyonne. She took a role in the HBO movie If These Walls Could Talk 2, which contained several stories about lesbian relationships, as opposed to the first ITWCT, whose subject was abortion. She also did a guest turn on television’s Will and Grace, playing an intern hired by Grace who becomes Trilby to Karen’s Svengali.

But the year 2001 will surely be Lyonne’s year. She’s in the second installment of American Pie, and has another seven movies that may be released during the course of this year. A notable film to look for will be The Grey Zone, a powerful drama directed by Tim Blake Nelson (who starred last year in “O Brother Where Art Thou”), which deals with the concentration camps of WWII.

“Hardest working woman in showbiz” may be an understatement for Natasha Lyonne, but the exciting thing is that we’ll get to watch her glow onscreen quite a bit this year. And that makes her one to watch in 2001!
