One to Watch: Michael Vartan

But for those of you that don't know his vital statistics, here they are: Michael Vartan was born in the small town of Fleury, France (pop. 300) on November 27th, 1968. His parents divorced and Michael stayed in France with his French father while his American mother moved back to the States. At the age of 18 he decided to move to Los Angeles, California to be with his mother, and it's in LA where he still lives. Upon arriving in LA, he was talked into going to acting classes, and he claims in interviews that he did it mainly to meet people. However, he had talent and began getting small roles in foreign films. He appeared in a few French films in the early 1990s, and later landed a leading role in the Italian film, "Fiorile", which was directed by the Taviani brothers. Two years later Vartan made his American debut with small roles in "To Wong Foo" and "The Pallbearer". He fared better with 1997's "The Myth of Fingerprints", which co-starred Noah Wyle, Hope Davis and Roy Schneider, to name a few. While this movie didn't make a big splash with audiences, the critics loved this film and Vartan got some great notices for his role as man incapable of making a commitment to his girlfriend. However, it was 1999's "Never Been Kissed" that had fans clamoring for more Michael Vartan. He played Sam Coulson, a teacher who finds himself falling for a student (really an undercover reporter, played by Drew Barrymore). And with this role, Michael Vartan finally experienced the success he deserves. Since that role, he appeared alongside Madonna in "The Next Best Thing" which also starred Rupert Everett, and he will next be seen as Launcelot in the 2001 television miniseries, "The Mists of Avalon". As for his interests and the basic minutiae about him, he's an avid NY Mets fan and plays hockey once or twice a week (to his agent's chagrin). He's also the nephew of the famous French singer, Sylvie Vartan. He's not married although he was once engaged and has been spotted with Gina Gerson in the not-to-distant past.
