Fan Fiction: Never Been Kissed

When I got the idea to do a series on up and coming actors, it was all based on this man right here. Michael Vartan. I became a fan after seeing him play teacher Sam Coulson in "Never Been Kissed" during the summer of 1999, a movie which co-starred Drew Barrymore as his student. He didn't have a lot of scenes in the movie, but he made the most of what screentime he did have.

The whole audience loved this actor and totally got behind Drew's character as she began to fall for her teacher (and mind you - I was in a NYC discount theater filled with jaded lawyers and investment bankers seeing a cheap movie after work).

So I began surfing the web soon after that and found this guy had been around for a while - he had played in 1996's "The Pallbearer" with David Schwimmer. Now, I saw that movie when it came out, and the only thing - I repeat the only thing - I took from that movie was that I really liked the classical music that played in the restaurant during one scene. But that movie had good people in it - Gwyneth Paltrow, Toni Collette, Barbara Hershey, and of course, Michael Vartan.

But before that he had a small role in one of my favorite movies, "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar". I love that movie - and had no idea he was in it. So I pulled out my videotape and sure enough - he has a small role as Tommy, the boy who menaces John Leguizamo a bit before cleaning himself up and calling John "Ma'am" like he was supposed to.

Sure though, now he's starting to get noticed a bit more and pretty soon he'll be on every magazine cover out there. He had a role on two episodes of "Ally McBeal" this season - she dated him and his father before dumping them both for Robert Downey Jr. He's about to co-star with Juliana Margulies and Anjelica Huston in "The Mists of Avalon" on TNT in the Spring of 2001. And he just recently began filming "One Hour Photo" with Robin Williams, a movie in which Williams' character starts stalking Michael Vartan's family after seeing their pictures develop at a photo booth.
