Karma ~ No, You Won't Go to Hell

(Setting) You walk into a dimly lit room which is empty except for a few mats on the floor. Candles are burning and the smoke from incense fills the air. On the walls are Sanskrit writings, and in the background you hear soft chanting... ooohhhmmm... ooohhhmmm... ooohhhmmm. As you find your place, you are joined by other students adorned in hooded robes. They sit on their mats, and you begin to fill a tingling sensation from the energy around you. An old man with a long, gray beard walks out from behind a curtained doorway. He walks over to a large hanging cylinder and strikes it once with an instrument. A loud gong echoes off the walls around you, and the teacher steps into the room. There is utter silence. You can feel the presence of the ancestors, the mystics, the old souls. Today's lesson is to be on the mysterious teachings of Karma.

Mysterious teachings? Nah! Karma isn't about all the mystery and secrets of the universe. There are no secrets really. Mystery? Plenty, but that's not what it's all about. That old "communication barrier" is part of what blocks us from understanding Karma, and another part of the reason is that so many of us are raised in a Christian society. Christian doctrine doesn't teach about reincarnation. It doesn't teach that we have eternity to learn and become enlightened spirits. It doesn't teach Karma! And the people who DO teach Karma are on the whole other side of the world and usually speak an entirely different language, but all that is changing rapidly!

Being raised in the Church of Christ, I've sat during many revivals where the preacher stood in front of us with his face turning beet red, sweat pouring off him, handkerchief dabbing away furiously, fists pounding on the pulpit, while he yelled and screamed and threatened with hellfire and brimstone and the tortures of Satan! I'm not the only one who has witnessed these displays, nor am I the only one who was terrified and sickened with these fears to the point that I finally turned away from God (Please feel free to replace the word "God" with your Deity of Choice through this article) in my life. Unlike me, however, some people never return to a point of having a loving relationship with their God because of the very idea of a supposed "loving God" who would be so vain as to send you to HELL to burn forever in a fiery pit of lost souls... and why? Just because you didn't obey him? Is that the relationship between a "father" and a "child?"
