Unconditional Love ~ Is It Possible?

Feb 6, 2001 - © T. Darlene Cheek

To love someone unconditionally... yes, that's possible.

To love yourself unconditionally... hmmm, a little bit harder, but yes, possible to accomplish.

To love everyone everywhere, regardless of anything...

even those who have harmed you in some way...
and yes, even those who have hurt you badly and left almost unbearable scars...

oh, and certainly all those really bad people in the world...
you don't mean EVERYbody?

That ain't possible, is it????

Why, YES! It certainly is possible!

Allow me to introduce you to some folks:

Annie is in jail for selling drugs. She has also been charged with child abuse and though everyone thinks that her ex-boyfriend was actually the abuser, Annie has accepted the charges. When we look at Annie, we see a woman who isn't very clean anymore. Her hair is a mess, her cloths are dirty, and her body has an awful odor. When she gets out of jail, she won't be able to find a job and will have to go on welfare to take care of her children. People will judge her harshly, deem her unlovable.

Now for the rest of Annie's story - Annie was sexually abused every day of her childhood. The constant abuse damaged her brain, so she wasn't able to finish school. A job at the local fast-food chain is the only one she can get, and her daycare bills are more than she brings home in pay. Her ex-boyfriend raped and beat her for the three years they were together, and he threatened to kill her and both their children if she tries to leave. After one attempt to escape, he found her and broke five of her ribs. Her self-esteem is so low now, and she feels so helpless that she doesn't feel like bathing or brushing her hair. She is in the deep depths of depression. Who can blame her? She was selling marijuana so that her children could eat, though she never used it herself. She wants to die, but she can't stand the thought of leaving her children in this world alone.

Joe is a homeless man. He lives down by the river and always has a bottle of liquor in his raggedy coat. Sometimes he wanders the waterfront mumbling to himself and cursing the unseen spirits that haunt him. People who like to take their lunch breaks at the picnic tables near where he sleeps condemn him for being a worthless drunken fool and a danger to society.
