How can natural therapies help our mind and emotions heal?

A. Some remedies and therapies help heal.
B. Some remedies and therapies help with the symptoms of the disorder.
C. And, some therapies help us stay well.

We're going to cover the same illnesses and disorders that we discussed in Part 2A. Remember, though, these complementary healing methods are not meant to replace your current therapy, and if you think that you may be suffering from any of these problems, it is important to see a doctor and not self-treat. Also, before you add any of these remedies and therapies to your health care regimen, speak to your doctor. In this article, I am going to cover several therapies for each disorder. The information I am using has been gathered from the books, The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Natural Remedies by Dr. C. Norman Shealy, The Master Book of Herbalism by Paul Beyerl, Chinese Health Care Secrets by Henry B. Lin, and Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine by Michael Murray, N.D., and Joseph Pizzorno, N.D.

ADDICTIONS

Ayurveda ~ Ayurveda works to balance the five energies that exist in all things: Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. Since Ayurveda treats us for our individual and unique constitutions, it is very difficult to give a specific, generalized treatment for any area without seeing an Ayurvedic practitioner. This therapy works to restore individuals to their own "prakruthi", or perfectly balanced state of being.

Chinese Herbalism ~ Traditional Chinese Medicine would diagnose based on the origin of the addiction. Alcoholism, for instance, would be treated by aiding the lungs or liver by using watermelon or Kudzu. Treatment would vary for other areas of addiction, and strong green tea would be used for almost all addictions.

Herbalism ~ Oats would be used to calm us and strengthen our willpower. To help our nervous system and reduce withdrawal symptoms, Skullcap and Valerian are excellent remedies. Cramp Bark also relieves nervous tension and jitters.

Aromatherapy ~ Essential oils are wonderful for helping associated depression. Some great examples of antidepressant scents are Chamomile, Clary Sage and Ylang Ylang. These can be used in the bath, in a vaporizer, or by placing a few drops on our clothing. Juniper is a good detoxifier.

Homeopathy ~ Homeopathic remedies are also based on our own individual constitution. Some good examples of homeopathic remedies are: Nux vomica to overcome nicotine cravings; Kali phos to strengthen our nervous system; Arsenicum for anxiety, restless or fear of being alone; and Absinthium for depression, disorientation or dizziness.
