Control
(When the client closes their eyes, take over by saying...) Keep them closed now, and go deep into hypnosis. At this point, we would begin to add positive suggestions to our session. It's absolutely necessary to state everything as a positive suggestion such as "You are now a non-smoker" instead of a negative such as "Never smoke again." If we face this problem we're trying to heal in a negative manner, our subconscious will take over and become defensive rather than cooperative. Some hypnotists use an aversion technique where the client can become physically ill if they attempt to smoke a cigarette or eat something sweet, for example. I do not recommend this technique. Feel free to practice the Flowers' Induction on yourself or with friends or family. This series of articles is written to give you a better understanding of what hypnosis is, how it works, what this technique can help you accomplish, and to hopefully alleviate any fears some of you may have regarding hypnosis. It is not so that you can go right out tomorrow and open a hypnotherapy practice. There are laws in many states that govern hypnosis practices. You also want to remember that a client respects and feels safe with a hypnotherapist who is actually certified and has taken the time and effort to take the required training. Someone who is unqualified can do damage to the client's mental or emotional state, and we definitely don't want to do that. Stick with relaxation techniques until you have the knowledge and experience to move forward. Hypnosis is a powerful and wonderful healing experience that can work on the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Practiced by an ethical person with a loving heart, it's power is immense. I hope to see you all next week for the continuation of this series.
