I'm Ready to Quit Smoking (Part II)© T. Darlene Cheek
When we quit smoking, we often start to feel deprived, we grieve the loss of a coping mechanism, and we can fall into feeling envious of other people who still get to smoke. That doesn't have to be true if we: 1) Simply realize that we quit smoking for an important reason, which is why we wrote the note to ourselves about why we want to quit; 2) Go right ahead and grieve the loss, it's a healthy way to be rid of that negative energy for good; 3) Keep a pack of cigarettes where you can always get to them.
WHAT?! Yes, keep that pack of cigarettes. This puts a subliminal message deep into your subconscious that says "I can smoke whenever I want to, I'm not deprived." You also want to instill in your mind the fact that you are stronger than that little white wrapper filled with tobacco. The visualization in the hypnosis script will strengthen that image. "... but what if I slip and smoke one?" So what? We're just human beings after all. Don't beat yourself up over it. Let it go. Usually after doing the self-hypnosis, you'll never be able to go that far anyway. You also want to reward yourself for not smoking. Kicking any addiction is a major step in our lives, and YES, smoking is an addiction, and don't let anyone tell you it's just a habit. There's one thing about that addiction, though. You can take vitamin supplements to keep your body from knowing you're not getting your daily dose of Nicotine. Did you know that Niacin used to be called Nicotinic Acid? Niacin is very similar chemically to Nicotine, and there are Niacin receptors in your brain. When you quit smoking, those receptors start to feel a deficiency of what they thought was a nutrient. So, if you keep giving your body something similar, your mind won't know the difference. Foods high in Niacin are olives, cabbage, lettuce, soy flour, rhubarb, carrots, brewer's yeast, apricots, tomatoes, swiss chard, spinach, cucumbers, beans, almonds and celery, to name a few. Other supplements that help during this process are B Complex and Vitamin C (time released is best) due to their abilities to flush alkalinity from your body. Research has proven that acidic urine causes excretion of nicotine from the body, causing your body and mind to want to replenish its level of Nicotine. Vitamin C and Vitamin B3 counteract the acidity and create an alkaline urine, where the body doesn't lose its level of Nicotine/Niacin.
